Patient Education: Procedures & What to Expect

Your comfort, safety, and understanding matter to us. Our providers take time to explain each procedure, answer your questions, and discuss results and next steps. If you ever feel unsure or anxious, we encourage you to speak openly with your care team.

Below is helpful information about common in-office procedures we perform, including what they are, why they're done, and what to expect.

Endometrial Biopsy

An endometrial biopsy is a quick, in-office procedure used to collect a small sample of the uterine lining.

Why it's done:

  • Evaluate abnormal or heavy uterine bleeding
  • Assess the uterine lining in perimenopause or menopause
  • Investigate irregular periods

What to expect:

  • The procedure usually takes a few minutes
  • You may feel brief cramping similar to menstrual cramps
  • Mild spotting afterward is normal
  • Results are typically available within a few days

Colposcopy

A colposcopy allows your provider to closely examine the cervix using magnification after an abnormal Pap test.

Why it's done:

  • Further evaluate abnormal Pap or HPV test results
  • Identify areas of cervical cell changes

What to expect:

  • Performed in the office and usually well tolerated
  • A vinegar and betadine solution is applied to highlight abnormal areas
  • A small biopsy may be taken if needed
  • Mild cramping or spotting may occur afterward

IUD Insertion & Removal

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are highly effective, long-term birth control options.

Why it's done:

  • Long-acting, reversible contraception
  • Hormonal or non-hormonal options available

What to expect:

  • To help ensure your comfort, premedication is offered prior to the procedure
  • Insertion takes only a few minutes
  • You may feel cramping during and shortly after the procedure
  • Most patients return to normal activities the same day
  • Removal is typically quick and straightforward

Nexplanon® Insertion & Removal

Nexplanon is a small contraceptive implant placed under the skin of the upper arm.

Why it's done:

  • Long-acting birth control for up to three years
  • Low-maintenance and reversible

What to expect:

  • Local anesthesia is used for comfort
  • Insertion and removal are quick procedures
  • Mild soreness or bruising may occur temporarily

Incision Checks

Wound checks ensure proper healing following surgery or procedures.

Why it's done:

  • Monitor healing
  • Check for signs of infection
  • Review wound care instructions

What to expect:

  • Visual examination of the incision site
  • Discussion of any symptoms or concerns
  • Guidance for continued recovery

Suture & Staple Removal

Once healing is complete, sutures or staples can be safely removed in the office.

Why it's done:

  • Prevent skin irritation
  • Promote proper healing and scar formation

What to expect:

  • Quick and typically painless procedure
  • Mild pulling sensation may be felt
  • Aftercare instructions provided

Non-Stress Tests (NSTs)

A non-stress test monitors your baby's heart rate and movements during pregnancy.

Why it's done:

  • Monitor fetal well-being
  • Common in the third trimester with high-risk pregnancies

What to expect:

  • Non-invasive and painless
  • You'll relax in a comfortable position while monitoring occurs
  • Usually lasts 20–40 minutes

Ultrasound & Fetal Monitoring

Ultrasounds provide important information about your baby's growth and development.

Why it's done:

  • Confirm pregnancy
  • Monitor growth and anatomy
  • Assess fetal health

What to expect:

  • Performed in-office
  • Gel is applied to the abdomen or a vaginal probe is used early in pregnancy
  • Images are reviewed with you whenever possible
